“I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes. I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands.” (Psalm 119:59-60 NIV)

The landmarks are often unfamiliar to you whenever you go into an area for the first time. You are very dependent on following the directions provided by the navigation system on your smartphone to get you to your destination. You may be tempted to ignore the lady talking to you from your phone, but it would be unwise, especially if you are traveling through a dangerous neighborhood.

You may get distracted by what you see through your car’s windows, but you must hasten to obey the directions, especially if you don’t want to have some unfortunate delays in your journey! The psalmist looked at his life and the outcomes of his actions related to the instructions he received from God’s statutes. He realized that he had to make some directional changes in his life.

I think we can all learn from his example since drifting off course happens to us all. It is tough to stay focused on doing right daily, weekly, and year after year. Sometimes we hit the rumble strips on the side of the highway and realize that the turbulence we feel is because we have dozed off ever-so-slightly. We have drifted from the center of the road! A mid-course correction is urgently called for, and we turn the wheel just in time to avoid a sudden stop in a ditch.

The moment you realize that you are no longer in the center of God’s wisdom as revealed in His statutes, a swift response is critical to your survival! Immediately return to the kind of life that operates in the center of God’s will. Avoid living on the edge where calamity awaits.

God’s wisdom requires self-examination, and when the examination proves that self is no longer wise, a rapid return to the true north of God’s Word is essential to our continued position of favor with the Lord.

Action Steps

  1. Have you been drifting away from godly wisdom lately? Has it been hard to keep your focus on the center of His will with all of life’s distractions? If so, consider your ways. Turn your next steps towards God’s wisdom. Hurry and don’t delay. Obey God’s commands, and you will remain in a place of divine favor.
  2. Remind yourself to self-examine daily against the statutes of God’s Word.
