“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12-13 NIV)

When you first read this portion of Scripture, you sit back and go, “That’s a little scary, you know. Think about it. Everything I’ve ever done? Every thought I’ve had? Oh, man, I don’t want all that to get out! I don’t want everybody to know every thought I’ve ever had!”

But when you think about it a little more, you begin to reflect on Who God is and how much He loves us. He cares for us so much! We should say, “Wow, thank you, Lord. You’ve given us Your Word so it could penetrate our hearts’ cores.”

When we allow it, the Word helps us clear out all our baggage, that is, the mistakes we’ve made. It helps us confess the wrongdoings we’ve allowed in our lives. It will enable us to correct our attitudes and actions.

We should pray, “Father, You’ve given us this inspiring, encouraging Word, which ultimately points back to your son, Jesus, and all He’s done for us. Thank you, thank you, God, for your awesome Word!”

When we sit back and think through all of that, we should be so encouraged by the incredible gift of God’s Word. The wise person recognizes that they will be held accountable by God, Who sees and knows everything about us. There is no avoiding that reality. However, having been given the wisdom manual of God’s Word, the wise person eagerly devours the contents of this holy book to ensure they will not be disappointed by God’s final audit of their lives.

These realities make wise people desirous of spending more time in God’s Word because they know they will receive the truth they need to stay on track. They know that they will get the truth that guides them in the direction they need to go in life.

Know that God knows it all. Nothing can be hidden from God, but that is not a negative. It should encourage us to deep-dive into God’s Word to discover everything He has provided for us to succeed. Be encouraged with that today.

Action Steps

  1. Some people run away from the Word of God like some run away from an annual medical checkup. They do not want to find out what may be wrong with them. But not so with us! Encourage yourself to view God’s Word as a place where you can go to improve yourself! When we allow the Word of God to probe our souls, we are excited to learn how we are doing and how we could do better.
  2. If God knows everything about you, there is no need to hide from Him. Allow Him to instruct you from His Book of Wisdom so you may do better going forward.
  3. Remember that we will all have a life audit at the very end of this life. If we allow the Word of God to help us make corrections along the way, we do not need to fear the day of accountability before God’s throne.
  4. Decide to make adjustments daily as God’s Word challenges you to change for the better. It is the wise way to live!
